**I couldn’t read a new book this week, and from the book I’m still reading, I couldn’t really find a connection to my project. Instead, I focused on my reflection for this week!**
As I film and upload videos on Youtube, I often have to spend time titling my videos. Although it may seem quite simple to name any video, it actually takes a lot of consideration and thoughtful reflection to give a title to something. Especially for the video I uploaded this Thursday, about my favorite Korean books, it was difficult for me to title it because I couldn’t find a suffice way to perfectly describe the content. While it was possible to name it just “내가 좋아하는 책” (My Favorite Korean Books), I wanted to give a little more meaning to it by using a term, as we learned in our English class. In the end, I decided to say “새로운 관점이 필요할 때” since I talked a lot about those books opening my perspectives and worldview to be more open-minded and nonjudgemental in social issues. I’m not really sure if that catches the audience’s attention or it adequately portrays my point that video, I think I did an okay job! My thoughts into titling my videos led me to reflection on the general concept of titles. Often times in our daily lives, we have to title something. If you’re a writer, you would title your essays or books. If you’re an SNS user, you would have to pick a nickname/ ID for your account. (Reflect on a time when you had to decide your username for Instagram account. For me, it was hard because I wanted to name it just simply “jungminlee.” However, there were so many users who already had that name so I had to change it “jung_min_leee” Do you see that extra “e” at the end just simply make this name work?) In English classes, we learn the importance of interesting titles and how great titles set up the attitude of the readers when they read something. The titles of those productions represent what those were for. Similarly, one’s position/ contribution to its community can be a title. In fact, the Merriam-Webster dictionary defines a title as “an appellation of dignity, honor, distinction, or preeminence attached to a person or family by virtue of rank, office, precedent, privilege, attainment, or lands.” I believe that in this case to represent someone’s dignity, honor, distinction, or preeminence, we can actually create and revise our titles. Often times, the titles are given for the tangible creations. I create the title for my videos; artists create the title for their artworks; rappers title their songs. This is partially true for what I would call as our value-titles. Our value-titles can be anything. If you’re mentoring someone, your value-title would be a helpful, precious mentor for someone. While the literal titles are usually set forever, I believe we can always improve and change our titles through our behaviors and interactions with others. As I’m thinking about my future a lot theses days, I would like to set a goal for my life to have diverse and many value-titles. It doesn’t necessarily mean that I want to have a lot of occupations (although it’s true) but it rather means that I want to create and improve our values and impacts to my surroundings as much as I can. By doing this, I believe I can create more value-titles, depending on what myself means to others.
